What a tax invoice needs in Australia
If you're registered for GST, a tax invoice for a sale needs to show:
- the words Tax invoice at the top;
- your business name and ABN;
- the date you issue it;
- what you supplied: a short description of each item, with the quantity and price;
- the GST amount, or a line saying the total price includes GST;
- for sales of $1,000 or more, the customer's name or ABN as well.
If your customer asks for a tax invoice for a sale over $82.50 (including GST), you need to give them one within 28 days. Not registered for GST? Call it an Invoice, not a tax invoice, and don't add GST. These are the ATO's rules in short; check the ATO's tax invoice page if you're unsure.
What a good quote has
- What you'll do, in plain words, and what isn't included.
- The price, ex GST with the GST shown, or a clear total including GST.
- How long the price holds, usually 30 days, so old quotes don't come back to bite.
- The deposit and when the rest is due.
- A way to say yes: a signature line on paper, or an Accept button on a quote sent by link.
